The French Connection - A Review

By May 27, 2023

A real-life drama about the drug bust that made headlines in 1971, The French Connection features Gene Hackman and Fernando Rey in superb performances. The movie is gritty, realistic, and exciting and it remains one of the best police films ever made. The film also has a great script by Ernest Tidyman (Shaft) and it won a number of awards at the time including Best Picture and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Hackman. It also received a Writers Guild of America Award and an Edgar Award for screenplay. It was followed by a sequel in 1975 with Hackman and Rey reprising their roles.

The film was the first to use a widescreen format for its photography which enhanced the feeling of realism. It also used a lot of street and sidewalk shots that added to the feel of the movie. The camera work was very good too, and the editing really brought out the tension of the movie.

There are some scenes The french connection kissed of violence in the film but it is not overdone. This is a very realistic portrayal of what happens in police departments at times but it does not take an overly violent or gory approach to the film. In fact, the violent parts are very short and they add to the overall realistic feel of the film.

The story is about a police unit that gets onto a major heroin trafficking ring that is coming into New York City from France. The cops are led by a narcotics officer played by Gene Hackman and they are assisted by his partner played by Fernando Rey. The story is told very well and the acting is excellent in all of the scenes. The movie does have a slow pace at times but it is a very interesting and entertaining drama.

The film is definitely worth seeing. It has stood the test of time very well and it is still better than many similar Hollywood police thrillers from recent years. It is also one of the few films to win a Best Picture Oscar. It is an excellent movie and it has helped to set the standard for future police thrillers. It is hard to imagine a film being released that is as good as this or even close to it. This is a must see movie for anyone who loves police or crime thrillers. It is certainly an Oscar worthy film and it should be seen by everyone.
