A Course in Miracles
Since its publication in 1976, A Course in Miracles (ACIM) has sold more than three million copies without any paid advertising. It has become a modern spiritual classic, with a scriptural status among its readers. It has also challenged traditional Western religious thought and influenced a growing number of people who consider themselves spiritual but not religious.
The Course is written in three volumes: the Text, which lays out its thought system; the Workbook, a set of 365 daily lessons that emphasizes experience over belief in a theology; and the Manual for Teachers, which provides answers to questions commonly asked by students. Its intellectually sophisticated language and spiritual inspiration have led some to compare it with some of the world’s great literature. Its practical approach to achieving transformation focuses on forgiveness as the means of undoing the illusion of separation.
A Course in Miracles started with two Columbia University psychologists who were tired of the anger and division in their lives. They decided to find a way to heal their hurt and to restore peace. In 1965, they began a process of inner dictation in which the words for the Course appeared as if from outside. A course in miracles Then, as they transcribed the material, they wrote in shorthand so that the typewriter could keep up with the speed of the words. They did not know who their author was, but they believed it to be Jesus. The Workbook was completed in seven years, and the Text took another ten. It was published by the Foundation for Inner Peace in 1976.
Since then, ACIM has attracted an international following. It has changed many people’s lives, and it has become an important reference for those who are seeking alternative spiritual guidance. Its alleged authorship and its challenge to traditional Western religion have made it controversial for some Christians, although it clearly states that it is only one of thousands of spiritual paths.
One of the central themes of the Course is that God is love, and that the human experience is a manifestation of this love. It is the purpose of our existence to become aware of this love, and it is possible for everyone to do so. The course teaches that the most effective means of doing this is through forgiveness, which is the path to freedom and happiness.
A Course in Miracles offers a powerful, comprehensive perspective on reality and the human condition. Its teachings have a deep impact on our perception of the world and our relationship to it, challenging every value we hold as true. It is not for the faint of heart, but it can be read in a manner that suits a person’s own lifestyle and temperament. The most common method of studying it involves reading a chapter or section a day, with the intention of incorporating its principles into one’s life.
